SD40E Disc Molding Subsystem

Sumitomo (SHI) Demag’s all-electric SD40E Disc Molding Subsystem with advanced direct-drive technology brings the highest levels of precision, energy efficiency and performance to the disc molding industry. The SD40E features four direct-drive, Sumitomo-built, AC servo motors with full closed-loop control and digital sensors. Injection, rotation, clamping and cut punch are controlled by these motors.

Extensive R&D has gone into the design of the direct-drive motors to achieve a lighter, more compact, low inertia design with the best mechanical configuration for each motion. The result is a low inertia system that draws power only as it is needed, is easier and faster to stop and start, and is exceptionally precise. Plus, the use of permanent magnet stators has made these synchronous motors even more energy efficient. These energy efficiency achievements are significant: the SD40E is 12% more efficient than the previous all-electric model and well over 60% more efficient than the hydraulic model.

In addition to the superior energy efficiency, these beltless motors provide superior mechanical efficiency, repeatability and durability, and avoid problems associated with belt wear/adjustment and belt dust.

Other advantages of the all-electric technology result from lower demand on cooling systems, reduced expenditures related to hydraulic oil and filters, a cleaner molding environment and precision repeatability that ensures less scrap.

Superior performance features for the SD40E include:
